 2015's Urban Wine Festival, put on by 1215 Wine Bar & Coffee Lab, was a great success! Thank you for all your support, for coming out, for drinking better wine with us. We'll keep you posted via social media and our website about the next event. At 1215 we have a certain philosophy: we believe in better wine. We believe wine should speak to a certain place. We believe farmers & winemakers are one in the same. We believe in sustainability. We believe there are good and bad wines, and what sets them apart has nothing to do with price. This is what we mean by better wine. It's what we care about, it's what we pour, it's what we want you to drink. More than anything, we believe wine is social, without pretension, and for everyday enjoyment. On Saturday June 13, 2015, we’re putting this philosophy on display in the most accessible & honest way we know how: in a parking lot, surrounded by friends, live music and great food, in the neighborhood we call home. Join us for the inaugural Urban Wine Festival, in the parking lot next to 1215 Wine Bar & Coffee Lab, on Vine Street in Over The Rhine. Benefiting: Over the Rhine Community Housing and the Recovery Hotel. SCHEDULE of EVENTS: 12pm - Seminar: Wines That Speak to a Certain Place Join our panel of industry experts - faces you know and love from restaurants and bottle shops around town - as we discuss what "terroir" really means, and why it's the hallmark of better wine. How do soil types, farming practices and the culture of a place actually show up in a glass of wine? We'll also discuss how to move wine culture in Cincinnati and beyond toward a greater recognition and demand for wines that express terroir. 2pm to 10pm - Open Tasting We've carefully selected 24 wines for this event. All styles are here - from big, chewy and bold to light, zippy and mouthwatering. Reds and whites, and some bubbles in between. Check out your UWF Guide for a better understanding of each wine, or chat up the knowledgeable folks pouring for you. This is the best way to find out what you like, love and never knew existed in wine! It's not all just Pinots and Cabs, friends (but we'll have those too). There's so much to experience and discover. Meet the Seminar Panelists...  Daniel Souder Wine Director 1215 Wine Bar & Coffee Lab Daniel Souder entered the hospitality industry in management for Bronte Bistro in Joseph Beth Booksellers across the Midwest and Southeast. While in that role Daniel picked up the wine bug, and soon after passed his Level I test through the Court of Master Sommeliers. From there Daniel became part of the opening team at Enoteca Emilia, where he deepened his passion for and knowledge of Italian wine. There he worked with Chef Jeremy Luers, who Daniel would eventually join up with again to open The Presidents Room (TPR) at The Phoenix, as Manager and Wine & Beverage Director. He received acclaim at TPR for a dynamic wine & cocktail program that played nicely with Luers’s Italian-German take on American cuisine. With the creation of several wine programs under his belt, Daniel took on the Level II test. He passed, becoming a Certified Sommelier. At that point Daniel knew he wanted to make a greater impact on the wine & hospitality community. So in 2015, Daniel (re)joined the 1215 Wine Bar & Coffee Lab family, with the goal of using his passion to truly connect the people of Cincinnati to the rapidly growing & evolving wine industry.  Kevin Hart Beverage Director BOCA Restaurant Group Kevin is an experienced sommelier and decorated student of the vine. He worked the floor at Boca for seven years to become sommelier and general manager all between 2005-2012. He “studied abroad” with Jean Robert, learning French wines as sommelier at Pigall’s during 2008. After years in the restaurant world, he took his knowledge into another realm and teamed up with one of his mentors to grow wineCRAFT, an importing-distributing company based in Cincinnati that supplies many of the top wines to the region. There he was able to build a portfolio of incredible wines and extend their reach in the Cincinnati community. Then in 2014, Kevin returned to the Boca family, where as Beverage Director he is overseeing beverage programs at four restaurants - Boca, Sotto and Nada Cincinnati as well as Columbus. In all these years, and through extensive travels, Kevin has built close friendships with some of the world’s top wine producers, connoisseurs and obsessives.  Adam Shobert Sales Professional Wine Trends Importer & Distributor Adam Shobert's 16 years in the wine industry has included stints in restaurants, retail, and distribution. Currently, he is a Sales Professional for Wine Trends and represents one of the most dynamic wine portfolios in the country. He is a Certified Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers and a Certified Specialist of Wine through the Society of Wine Educators. With a passion for Old and New World wines alike, Adam truly enjoys being part of an industry and a world that is growing in an incredibly positive way.  Moderated by:
Joanna Argus Kirkendall Owner, 1215 Wine Bar & Coffee Lab Joanna has always understood the link between wine, coffee and the human connection. Feeling that these products are unique in the way they allow people to open up, catch up and connect, she opened 1215 in 2012 to bring this experience to more people. It wasn't until Joanna met and worked with so many passionate wine professionals that she understood the human connection goes all the way back to the farmers. Over the last three years and with the influence of talented staff collaborating on the wine lists, 1215 has advanced to pouring wines made by farmers and families first - people who care about what the land has to offer and what a grape inherently has to say - ultimately leading to an ever-changing list of clean, beautiful, honest wines. The efforts to educate, expand people's horizons and bring people together has paid off - 1215 has been named Best Wine Bar by CityBeat Cincinnati for the past two years! Working with her fantastic team, getting to know the guests who come through the doors and being a part of the OTR community are the things that drive Joanna everyday. |
